You should have gone with your first thought, PMD.
It doesn't really matter how the damage was done and you may never find out how it was done.
The only thing that matters is that this could not have happened when the coin was struck so that means it is damage.

The lines through GOD are stress cracks in the thin copper plating, also happening when the coin was damaged.
