For consideration, an uncirculated specimen of the 1957-D Misplaced mint mark quarter. The CPG and PCGS currently classify it as FS-501. I tend to agree with Variety Vista that is just unusually shaped die cracking, scratching, or other damage. It isn't even close to the same size or curvature as the D mint mark on the same coin, and there is no width to the feature. Based on the die flow and large RIDB sliver on the wing, I would say this is VLDS.

Finally had the time to get this one under magnification again. My coin left, a similar die state PCGS plate coin on the right.

I think it's reasonable to concluded that this is a specimen of 1957-D 25¢ FS-501/902, the so-called Misplaced-D.

I also stand by my belief that this die variety represents an unusually shaped die crack, and not an actual mispunched D over the small leaf.

I've submitted around 40 of these including the Plate coin which was a MS66.
PCGS was very tight with the grades on this variety. For years the top grade was MS64. I'd sent in 8 for straight grading without the variety attribution and got 5 65's. Next up a lone 66 hit the pop report, followed by a 66+. I made 2 MS66's including this one which was the finest example I've ever handled. I more or less lost interest but still have a bunch laying around. I would agree that whatever it is, it's not an actual mint mark.

Congrats on the high grades! That's quite a number to have submitted, did you track them down individually or find them together in a roll?

All 40 + were ebay purchases bought in a range of around $7-$15. I do recall 1 seller that had great images had listed several 57-D's most of which were 501's. I've Cherry picked a few hundred varieties back when I was playing coins. This one was my best, paid $5.29 free shipping.
