How would you grade this "as is" ?
Are there any indications the toning of this coin was / is artificial ? When I compare it to the 1954 FHD proof in this thread from 5 years ago, it fares pretty well: https://goccf.com/t/374504&SearchTe...anklin,Proof

Two questions:
1) Would having this coin slabbed without conservation allow the tarnish / toning to get progressively worse ?
2) Does toning affect the TPG grade ?

Thanks in advance for your grading thoughts.

As long as the grading wizards don't apply "altered surface", or "artificial toning" to their assessment it should not effect the grade. As far as continued toning progression it would depend on the environment the coin lives in and is there a substance on the coin to allow the coin to continue to tone. I have a proof Franklyn half with yellowing toning also but not as fully engulfed as yours.

It looks natural to me. The eye appeal of toning is always in the eye of the beholder, and I think it's a slight plus in this case. Shouldn't affect the grade in any case (unless a TPG calls it artificial). It likely will be stable in a slab for many years, but it wouldn't hurt give it an acetone bath before submitting it to remove any surface contaminants that might accelerate toning. Nice coin!

Very hard to grade a proof from photos.

Franklin proofs are known to tone like that so no problem there.
I agree with IndianGoldEagle - Too hard to grade a proof from pictures.

I don't see any distracting marks. I would say PF67 or maybe 68
