Something that made me wonder with numismatic articles... how do they have many images yet I don't see much references. Krause is a prime example. Do they mainly own the coins / banknotes or have permission? Or they purchase them for business and sell them at a later date? It may be a compilation from various collectors but I don't recall seeing a long list of authors or references...

The Krause catalogs certainly contain a list of acknowledgements.

Years ago, when I worked for a national museum, I used to handle the admin for requests for coin images for catalogs, reference books, film and tv.

Some of the specialised reference books published by Spink are based on the authors' collections.

I've occasionally asked for (and received) permission to use images from dealers' websites to illustrate articles.

Numista requests and receives permission from the copyright holders to use their images. In my opinion it is one of the strengths of Numista: they can have the best images in the world for many coin types because they have received permission from many of the national museums, the auctions houses with best reputations, etc. (of course this is not always exploited to the best possible effect because of the original crowd-sourced approach).
