An opening note: neither Wexler or Variety Vista spells out the cross-reference, but 1942 5¢ WDDR-004 is equivalent to DDR-007.

I bought this nickel the other day as a gem MS66 coin from the Omaha Hoard. I had thought that there was a slight possibility that the nickel was an example of FS-102. Turns out that was just that unusual polishing halo around Jefferson's bust that appears on some nickels of that era (and I have never really heard a satisfactory explanation for that phenomenon, either). Imagine my surprise when I inspected the reverse and found a big chunky doubled die.

Presented as evidence that it's usually better to be lucky than good, a lightly golden toned specimen of Best of 1942 5¢ WDDR-004 and WDDO-004, which corresponds to Variety Vista 1942 5¢ DDR-007. PCGS slab #11180814, MS66 1942 5¢ Omaha Hoard.

Thanks, guys. =)

I would call this DDR as basically on par with 1956 FS-801 and other chunky doubled dies. I wonder why Fivaz and Stanton didn't make this 1942 FS-801. Maybe they just didn't have a specimen, or felt there were too many other doubled dies clustered in those years?

Dearborn, I will check the steps when I have time to get into my office. My guess is that there are imperfections that hold it back from FS. PCGS is pretty strict in the early years because near-perfect steps are relatively abundant until the 1950s.
