Looking for some info on the 1913 Liberty nickel. I father said he had one given to him while on his paper route in 1935 but his mother gave it away as change. Thanks for the comments.

There are 5 known specimens of the 1913 Liberty nickel! Some suggest there may have been a 6th! These coins were clandestinely struck and concealed until the 1920's. They were struck knowing that they would be worth money. It is very, very unlikely that one of these 5 coins (or the highly unlikely 6th) has ever been in circulation!

Many, many altered and outright fake examples exist due to the extreme rarity of this coin. Early dealer B. Max Mehl offered a bounty for this coin as a way to drum up interest in his Star Rare Coin Encyclopedia. It would have been entirely possible to find one of these fake/altered coins in change in the 30s.

As an aside, I have had the privilege of seeing two of them- the McDermott and Walton specimens
