I am of the notion that proofs and SMS are more valuable individually than in the sets they came in. I have a 1967 SMS set with an FS-101 half dollar. I was considering sending the set in and letting them crack it to grade all the coins in it. Would it be worthwhile to do this? I know it wouldn't be without the DDO but I figure the value of that coin would cover the rest.

I believe those SMS sets are very easy to open.

You can still sell the set as a whole with the variety included in the set without breking it out and get the nice premium for it.more so as a SET than you would have if it were sold individually. A proof or SMS set with a variety in the set is more desireable than just a single error coin.At least that has been the case in my experience of selling.

I concur. More people collect certain series as sets than sets of intact sets. They will pay a little more to not have to deal with the excess because a little more for the one coin they want is less than a whole set.

What would be the point of grading the remainder of the set? You can buy graded SMS coins for super cheap, way way below the cost of grading. Get the valuable variety graded, forget the rest. That's my opinion, anyway.

Added: just checked cent through quarter, you can buy them in PCGS slabs for $15-20 including shipping for SPF66/67 coins.

Thank you all for your opinions. Every one of you makes a valid point. Food for thought.
