This coin is up for auction, closing later this week. I have strong doubts about it but would like to hear the opinion of the learned experts here on the CCF.

I will let the experts answer this, but you know I like the circulation cameo.

Are you looking for this specific date and mint, Hondo?

Not especially, NumisEd. Bidding was at $36 when I posted my query. It's up to $96 now, with 2 days remaining.
I won't be in the fight for it. Perhaps it's genuine. But there appear to be casting bubbles on both sides, and the edge does not look milled to me.

I asked because I have seen other circulation cameo 8 Reales on ebay. For example: https://www.ebay.com/itm/205697519381

I bought a contemporary counterfeit one a few years ago as shown in the thread linked below. The counterfeits of the 1822 Guanajuato issue are relatively good in my opinion. My tentative thought is that this is an extremely beat up, worn, struck original, but I would have to do a specific gravity test to be sure.

Seems to match this GNL# 1822-O: D/R: Go JM-001. Take a look. Last "2" high. Tilting's of DEI match. Poor edge shot. Weight probably irrelevant but these later 1822 are a bit crude. Worth minimally $100 even if a GNL CCC8R. JPL.

Thank you all. Bids are at $145 (+ 20% buyer's premium) with 26 hours to go. I think that I'll let it pass.

It's comforting to know that plenty of collectors will pay good money for coins with this kind of eye appeal (or lack thereof).

...since I am increasingly picking up worn and beat coins that cost plenty
