Yes, will be interesting to see how this one goes. People seemed to go nuts for the last $2 release but that was for a coin that commemorated a significant event - the 80th anniversary of WWII. I wonder how many people can keep buying every 'coin' that the RAM pumps out?
Commemorating cartoon characters seems to be out of whack with the previous way of recognising SIGNIFICANT people and events in Australia's history. Images of unique native animals are also a reasonable thing to use on our national currency. I think our national currency should reflect something that we can all be proud of. Not sure abstract cartoon characters are of equal standing with those people, events or native animals that have previously been depicted on our currency.
The RAM are going down the same path as Australia Post did years ago and just pumping out 'junk' products just to bleed money out of collectors. Australia Post still keep issuing stamps but who uses them for their original purpose these days? The last issue of AFL coins also flopped and they can be bought for less than the original recommended retail price. I wonder if we will see Woolies or the other retailers bother with colored $2 coins in the future when the previous releases are easier to get from ebay?
I think it will be interesting to see how these 'junk coin' releases go. How much longer will people collect them I we go cashless?
