I am have a problem with mexican pesos. Failing to resist taking nice ones home. This is another about uncirculated. I want to ask here if you consider this one cleaned or not.

Light from the side of the coin shows on the reverse vertical lines that came from the die.

But light from the top of the coin shows some evidence on the area above UN PESO on the reverse of the coin having been wiped horizontally in that area.

Does not bother me but it is a good coin to use for asking what the threshold is. Is this considered cleaned?

That spotty toning could be a sign of cleaning.

I'm leaning toward 'not cleaned'--at least not in the last several decades. If cleaned long, long ago, it was a gentle one. Would love to evaluate the piece in-hand (we know that won't be happening!).

Thanks all.

I think there was evidence of some light rubbing, left-to-right, on the central fields of the reverse. But it is barely noticeable, and only with strong light perpendicular to it. I was wondering if a coin would be described as cleaned because of that. I am now thinking that a coin like this is below the threshold.

I will try to get a better photo during the weekend if there is good sunlight.

Still looks AU-58 to me. Only minor rubbing on the high points.

Thanks! I am only finding these silver pesos with that look. Every single one I see in very nice shape has what looks like this light sideways rubbing on the reverse under a strong light.

I know that priced by weight I cannot demand uncirculated coins. But this was messing with my perfectionism. Now I can let it go and just keep assembling the set with all dates
