Since I had so much fun last contest (Congrats again to Nod2003! Prize enroute!) I decided to do it again! This code is easier (I think) so it'll probably go quick. Once again, this is an 18 word quote from an American Politician. Quote punctuation, capitalization and word spacing are ignored in the coded message below (i.e., the capitalization, sentence structure and punctuation below does not translate directly to the quote). Prize is an 1883 P Morgan. (BU) 1. Post as many guesses as you wish. 2. Winners must have 50 posts (the 50th could be your winning guess). 3. I will give hints periodically and will answer questions, (if worded relatively specifically). Enjoy! This time has welcomed every American. The time was there, ever around. Partially aware, then hungrily questing, wishing foolishly, suspiciously, you go maniacally along, plotting feverishly. Many thoughts don't often die pleasantly. Go stealthily every time. (Nearby the thoughts thicken). Bravely look up longingly; many doubts pose a valid risk. Go there? Jump away? Sing the song Mama used! Afterward don't fall! Look back wistfully! Today the noose must snug. The time that God made has ever fallen. Oh, dismay! Oh, help! (It doesn't often grow back here). Perhaps love may place the wishes you desire here, (maybe). You don't need goodness! Just look back! Awaken! Look closer! Open clues! The horizon does look that near! Look righteously! Just nearby living folks open inside, bravely disintegrating. The world doesn't care that you help them. And all nearby hope dismally fails. Yesterday did open eyes. Many owe large fees, hopelessly hoping. Then time shuts down.Edited by Moe145 06/10/2009 6:05 pm

I re-read my coded story. Kinda gloomy isn't it? Oh well! You can solve it!

Maybe one of these, which are (admittedly) just eighteen-word guesses?
"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." -- Thomas Jefferson
"When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty." -- Thomas Jefferson
"I know not what others may choose but, as for me, give me liberty or give me death." -- Patrick Henry
"I must study politics and war so that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy." -- John Adams

Quote: I'll explain the encoding if anyone wants to hear it... Please do! I never had a chance on this one, although I used this quote the other day with someone!

Ok, the encoding mechanism: (Though I should use this one over since it wasn't decoded...) It's still a basic 5 x 5 grid but I built in a lot more flexibility for me to encode a message. Now any of 5 (or 6 if a K) letters in the selection column translate to the coded letter (i.e., V, Q, L, F or A gives you any of the letters in the first column of encoded letters) and you have 5 (6) choices for the second letter to properly pinpoint the coded letter. It uses the first letters of the words in order. Again it's an Positive X then Negative Y plotting scheme. Example: First two words of the code are "The tree". The first T gives you the 4th column over (X) then the second T, working down (Y), gives you a T in the fourth row. Thus, the first letter of the encoded message is T. The hints are the wife had a connection to R. Bernard. Jefferson's wife's maiden name is Skelton. Red Skelton's real first names are Richard Bernard. The 3 quarters were to show there are still 25 letters in the center grid, and now also 25 above & 25 to the left. (Cryptic, I know.) Now, I just need a more obscure quote! You guys are TOO smart! (Or lucky, either one!) But we have a winner! Kudos to WpgLwr!

Thanks, Moe!
This'll be my first ever Morgan, believe it or not.
And I'm learning a lot about codes, too!
But actually, I took the picture of the three quarters to mean "Liberty", and started looking for quotes about that. The 25-25-25 clue was totally lost on me.
I'll PM you with my address.

Quote: I took the picture of the three quarters to mean "Liberty" I was thinking the same thing until I saw that you had won. Then all I could think about was the three very modern quarters I got in change this morning.

I was thinking 1/4 so was trying every fourth word, etc.

Nod2003 (the codebreaker extraordinaire) wrote: Quote: I was thinking 1/4 so was trying every fourth word, etc. I like it! (I do have other code ideas and more Morgans, so I'll refine it and pick a good quote.) I'll be back!!
