ANA - One item in our collection, the Alabama Centennial Half Dollar, was struck by the U.S. Mint in 1921 to celebrate Alabama's 100th anniversary, after the state joined the Union in 1819. While the coin's official purpose was to fund "historical and monumental" projects, it also captured local pride and created excitement among collectors. A small number of coins included the symbol 2x2, representing Alabama as the 22nd state, generating additional numismatic buzz.

Designed by Laura Gardin Fraser, the first U.S. woman to design a coin, the Alabama Centennial Half Dollar originally was intended to depict President Wilson. However, after a delayed issuance and the 1920 election of Warren G. Harding, the coin instead featured William Bibb, Alabama's first governor, and Thomas Kilby, the sitting governor, making Kilby the first living person to appear on an American coin.

Fun video to watch but nothing new to be learned from it.

We are blessed and spoiled to have commems posting with us - reading his work brings new things to learn.
