I will be in downtown Houston at the end of the month for the NAAF (National Alopecia Areata Foundation) yearly conference. We are staying at the Hyatt Regency Houston.
I was wondering if there are any coin shops within walking distance. Walking distance to me is a mile in any direction.

None that I know anything about the ones I frequent are at least 3 miles away from you.
Here are a few from a local directory but I have no idea if they are just bullion buyers or real coin shops.
Houston Precious Metals; 607 Chenevert St, Houston, - (713) 228-3931 A few blocks away from the Hyatt
Houston Coin Buyer, Coin Shop, 1330 Westheimer Road, Houston, - (713) 521-4444 about a mile away

Can anyone tell me why they seek out coin shops instead of ebay? Is it to find rare coins you want or something?

In a coin shop (or at a coin show), I enjoy the opportunity to see a coin in hand before making a purchase. I also like getting to know the seller; see what kind of person he or she may be.

I also like these guys:
Collector's Coin Shop 6503 S. Rice Blvd Bellaire, TX 77401
Not really downtown but you can still get there in about 15 minutes.

I agree with jbuck. A coin you are holding in your hands and viewing is alot better than photos from ebay. Also on ebay you have to compete with tens of thousands of people if you are trying to cherrypick a coin. In a coin shop you have less competition because you have to actually go to the shop to see the coins. Getting to chat about coins face to face is also another plus. And a coin show makes all of this even better. Don't get me wrong at times you can find a deal on ebay.

There's one in Old Town Spring...can't remember the guy's name. It's in the "attic" of a clothing shop.

I would second the Houston Numismatic Exchange. Found it by chance when I was visiting last week. (The Ginger Man is only a couple of blocks from here, if you like an adult beverage!). The shopkeeper seemed pretty friendly and they had plenty of stock.

Ooh, the G-man is a good spot. I am not familiar with HNE in the Rice Village area. I'll have to pop down there one weekend and check it out.

Well this morning I decided I would take a long stroll down to HNE. It was somewhat warm on the way there. The guys there are very friendly and helpful. I picked up 9 Indian cents for my son. Looked at 2 2-cents. One was a MS60BN but at rim damage at 12 o'clock. The other was a EF, but was extremely worn on the "We" and looked scratched so I passed on both of them. The place with very busy with customers selling and buying. One guy came in and bought 10 Krugerrands for $9,900. I wish I had that kind of money. I had to take a taxi back to the downtown as it got too hot for me. I'm not use to this type of weather. If I ever make it back to Houston I will make sure I visit there again. Thanks again Richard, Bruce and futurshox for recommending HNE.
