Venetian grossos are far less commonly faked than ancient coins. I'd tend to assume they were genuine.

Easier to tell in-hand; replica-makers rarely bother to get the thickness right, since making an authentically thin replica would be too expensive.

First, the seller is a well-known and respected dealer. If it's a fake, I'm confident it was not intentional.
Bulgarian contemporary counterfeits are known (I think you mentioned this in one of your other posts).
It looks like the auction house Savoca got a big batch of them, and sold some as genuine before figuring it out (based on what I see in acsearch):

If your weight is low, that's what you've bought (I'm giving it 50/50 chance ... I don't like the large pellets decorating the throne reverse, but maybe that's just worn dies).
