I have a couple of medieval hammered silver coins that I'd like to get a consensus on authenticity. The second one here is a penny from Edward the Confessor:

I could if requested by the OP, but I got scolded the last time I did that for a 1600/earlier English coin.

Ah, OK. Didn't realize the focus was on more modern stuff over there.

Weight of this coin?

And, I've shown once before on this forum that I'm not so good on reading legends on these, but the reverse looks something like SPETMRN ON LVN

There are a lot of very good fakes of English hammereds out there. The other post that has peck marks lends more to its credibility, but those are easy enough to fake. These both have an authentic look & style to them, but pictures can only go so far, and one really needs to have them in expert hands to judge -- not just opinions of people who have some books or links to some random internet webpages. I don't know that I'd personally trust TPGs on these, but a majority of buyers would.

These are widely studied coins with tons of literature, including counterfeits (Abramson's Anglo-Saxon Counterfeits is a good starting point, but I don't have a copy myself). The best place to start is to acquire a knowledge of what real coins look like; their variety & styles, differences between engravers, &c.; but unless one is willing to put in the time/effort to do that (or knows people that have done so), a TPG is probably the best option.

To me, these & early modern Chinese/Japanese coins are the most difficult to determine authenticity... but maybe I'd feel differently if I specialized in these areas.

Agreed. These look legitimate to me, but they're the first higher end hammered silver I've bought that were not either already graded or purchased from a dealer that I've done a lot of business with. I suppose the main goal with these two verification requests was just to make sure that I didn't miss anything that would point to them being obviously counterfeit.

I am certainly not a verification expert with these, but
'Coin Archives - Edward the Confessor penny'
has lots of good pictures with the subject coin can be compared.
