I have not had much luck at all with this one. Possible billon composition. Not sure which side is obverse and reverse, but here are some images. In the first image, I am not sure of orientation, I could see rotating this 90 degrees for correct orientation. Looks like maybe a wreath and possibly a cross or some lettering there. On the other side, some text is clear. "-IENSIS:" is clear, but not sure what that is in the middle. I have seen "-IENSIS" used with London or Paris, but haven't come across anything matching this yet.

I got lucky and guessed APVLIENSIS (and I'd seen those palm fronds somewhere):

(and I think spence also has one of these)

These coins tell of a time of great cultural complexity in the Mediterranean:
- it is a coin of "Sicily" ...
- struck by a French (Norman) ruler ...
- with inscriptions in Latin and Arabic!

Agreed! I suspected Arabic writing, but that didn't make sense to me to be mixed with Latin inscriptions. Sure enough, it is!

Nice work on the identification @tdz! The only thing that I would add is that it can also be attributed as Biaggi 1228.

And here is my example as you have noted. At least on my budget, it seems hard to find them fully struck with all their details remaining.

Spencer, it looks like we each got the half of the strike the other is missing, on both sides!

Yes agreed! Someone at the mint wasn't aligning the hammer and anvil very carefully.
