To assist those trying to attribute 78-P Morgan dollars I compiled this step-by-step process that has served me well. Feel free to download and save this. Caveat ... I used memory to list the range of VAMs for each step, but I believe they are 98% accurate. Use the VAMWorld.com website as the definitive resource. By employing this process, you'll reduce your search from over 200 different VAMs to around a dozen or less.

Do you have any problems with posting this Attribution Guide on other pages so long as you are given credit for it? I would love to post this on a site I frequent, but would like permission before doing so.

remmy1100,

I have no problem with the use of this tool in any media. It's a compilation of public domain information and photos (and some personal photos). I would ask that you caveat to the reader ... "refer to VAMWorld for further information".

if it has a long arrow shaft (as you call it) and leaves are attached it could still be a 7/0TF so if it has leaves connected and a long arrow shaft (as mentioned above) then you have to look at the Obverse at the date area, both VAMs 84 and 83 have very distinctive attributes in the date that can determine if it is one of these two VAM's or just a 7/0 TF

Bryan,

On this one I went with what was easier for me. If I see a long nock PAF and no tailfeathers showing I first look for the extra talon of the VAM 30, then look at the obverse for the broken N/M of the VAM 31. If they are not evident I go to the obverse and look for the washed-out L or high 1/Low 8. If it's a long nock PAF, leaves connected, and no tail feathers showing it's one of those four.

Now look, we gone and confused everyone!
