The Boy Scouts of America will celebrate its 100th Anniversary in February 2010. In addition to a National Jamboree and many other activities, it has been suggested a Commemorative coin set be issued in February 2010 for the United States' preeminent youth organization for boys. This concept has been viewed upon favorably at the BSA National Office, but nobody, myself included has any idea how to go about getting such a proposition officially proposed, approved, and executed nor even if this would have to meet Congressional approval. Can such a request go directly to the U.S. Mint?
Does anyone have ideas, suggestions, thoughts, or insider knowledge on this proposal? The event is less than four years away, so time is of the essence.

Fred, my suggestion would be to contact Daniel Carr and point him to this thread. Since he has designed a few State Quarters, he may have some answers and may even be interested in designing them.

I believe that you would need to contact either your representative or senator. A legislative bill would need to be introduced to authorize this. AFAIK, the US Mint cant make suggestions for coinage introduction, it is strictly a legislative process. From www.usmint.govQ: I think that the United States Mint should produce a commemorative coin to honor a particular person or event. How can I make that happen? A:"The United States Mint cannot make decisions to produce commemorative coins by itself. Congress must enact legislation authorizing any commemorative coins, and constituents may contact their Members of Congress to voice interest. In addition, the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC), an independent organization, makes recommendations to Congress in its annual report as to what people or events might be honored with commemorative coins. You may contact the CCAC at 801 9th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20220." BTW, great idea Fred! I was a boy scout once upon a time and would love to add one of these to my collection in a few years

Fred, If you want to write up a post for the Coin Community Blog I will post it there. The blog does get a good amount of attention. Maybe a subtle plea for people to contact their Congressmen about this? You could email it to me.

Excellent idea Bobby, and I for one would sure like to see the design and coin that Daniel Carr would come up with. I'll bet it could be great!

Dan and Bobby, good ideas. But give me a little time on this. I've been in contact with BSA National on this and I don't want to duplicate their efforts since they have apparently formed (or are forming) a Centennial Committee. I'm just trying to steer them in the right direction and cut their internal red tape; I am concerned about the time it takes to get a commemorative coin from concept to production.
I also lost most of a day's worth of online activities today when a strong wind and sand storm knocked over my satellite dish, the first time this has ever happened. I only just got back online.

Fred, this whole thing sounds great. If we can help by lobbying for this, please let us know what you find out. I'd be proud to own a set! Mike

Given the encouragement from the forum, I have sent the proposal to the Deputy National Chief Scout Executive of the Boy Scouts of America who I happened to work with at the council level many years ago. I decided to bypass lower levels of BSA's bureaucracy for the sake of expediency. I requested to know if, in fact National has already considered this idea or, if not, would consider it. I do not expect a quick answer, especially if BSA has not previously considered this concept.
Query to the group: what denominations or types of commemoratives (e.g., half dollars, dollars, $5, $10; silver, clad, gold?) might be considered appropriate for such an issue?
