I think that what Louis is getting at CCCS are collector's "keepers" rather than dealer items for resale. The REAL benefit of CCCS, aside from the tamperproof and superior holders, is the certification of varieties not in Charlton or Trends as well as a registration format .. neither offered by ICCS. These are benefits much more so for the collector than resale dealer. I think that large-scale certs by dealers are still going to ICCS .. the best known right now and usually better for resale right now as well. A few more important auctions with CCCS material and things may change, but things move slowly in the numismatic world (except RCM "errors" that skyrocket and then fall smoldering, and nearly worthless, to earth).

For the record, all coins graded by CCCS are graded by 2 people!

I've finally had enough of ICCS, and I am a major ICCS fan. Three of the last four coins I've received have been overgraded, in my opinion. I've been willing to put up with a lack of website, email, and cert verification because ICCS has been so consistent and conservative in the past. The last straw was a coin with more than one distracting nick on the obverse, and serious rim roughness and quite a few bag marks on the reverse. This is an "MS-65" coin.

HHB, it is a no-brainer to me! However, as a CCCS supporter and customer, I may have a biased (a tad) opinion. CCCS is the way to go. Soft slab or hard slab, all of mine go to CCCS. :-)

1cent, did you send the ICCS coin(s) in question to ICCS and have them graded, or did you buy them off ebay or via a dealer?

hhb and mkb - I prefer not to post any pictures of the coin as it was bought in a private sale. The seller I bought the coin from has routinely sold me top notch coins though, so I don't hold it against him. I had it sitting on my desk earlier with a little natural light coming through the window, and the coin looked very good, probably MS-65 worthy. This makes me wonder about the lighting environment at ICCS, and if this very same situation happens during grading. The two obverse nicks I mentioned are incredibly distracting with a light directly over the coin, but nearly disappear with some ambient sunlight in the room.

If you bought the coin from someone, and it looks way over graded, then its likely the coin was switched at some point. I suspect there are many ICCS coins that have been switched. And its relatively easy. Anytime you intend on buying an ICCS coin, you need to check it to see if the grade makes sense. If you buy it off ebay or via an online auction, then you need to return the coin if it looks way out.

it has been mentioned earlier that CCCS has 2 people grade the coins. well, all I have to say is that if 2 graders are grading.... HOW can they miss a $2 NFL gold 1870 3 dot? It came back as a 2 dot!!! anyone can and will make mistakes.... BUT, enough said....for two to make the same very obvious mistake most certainly allows for some doubts about the 2 grader system. perhaps one just accepts the others grade?

Hi everyone, I'm new too numismatics and was going to send a couple my coins to ICCS for grading. But not finding a website I was shocked. However, I have done some information gathering and have been told by many local coin dealers that ICCS has at least 3 (sometimes 5) people grading the coin, then they toss out the highest and lowest grades leaving it an average of the remaining.
Can anyone confirm this?
Thanks $0.02 Worth

HHB, you keep yelling about the 2 dollar gold, but have you called Louis? I have never seen an image of your coin? Maybe you made the mistake? Yes, two people grade at CCCS. There is no way 5 grade at ICCS LOLOL Dealers will say a lot of things about coins and ICCS. Most should be ignored.........IMO

2 centsworth .. As far as I know, there has never bben 5 graders at ICCS, even when they were at the top of the food chain. Unless I'm wrong entirely, there are only Brian and his son .. 2 max and their grading has been very "liberal" for the last couple years.
