With silver dried up...and gold nuts...not much choice in Rome these days...

This is priced well above melt...looks original to me but I doubt I'll pull the trigger, but curious what the forum thinks.

Roma, my thoughts are mixed.

On the one hand it's a beautiful coin, rich in history, I'd love to own it, but it sure is a bit pricey isn't it?

I struggled with the same thoughts in '07 when I was eyeing St. Gauden pieces. Looking at my old notes I wrote, "I enjoy adding US gold coins to my collection. They're a bit expensive with gold at $700, but they have so much history and they look so sharp."

In hindsight now, sure I'm glad I snagged a couple of them.

There's another active topic, "The Psychology Of Silver Prices And Numismatic Premium," check it out. Based on comments here, "Numismatic premiums are going away on all but the scarcest items."

So yeah, how can a collector not be confused?

Good luck!

Roma, these sweet little gold dollars generally sell for well above melt - even ones that are ex-jewelry. It's a nice coin. Melt is about $225 - if you can get it for less that $300 it's not a bad deal.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Thanks for the replies.

It's priced between $300-$400 without negotiating which usually drops prices here by 10-15%.

Given the gains gold has made recently I don't really consider it a significant price - cross price averaging right? But still not sure. I'll post an alternative in another thread.
