While not plentiful, the classic series of United States ("US") commemorative coins does include several coins with an "island" heritage.

First up, the 1928 Hawaiian (European) Discovery Sesquicentennial Half Dollar. The coin was issued to mark the 150th Anniversary of the sighting/landing on the present-day Hawaiian islands by British explorer Captain James Cook (1778).

Note: Hawaii was a Territory of the US at the time of the coin's issue, it did not become a US State until August 1959.

Next up, the 1936 Long Island Tercentenary Half Dollar. The half dollar was issued to mark the 300th Anniversary of the roots of European settlement on the (present-day) New York island. The majority of the island's early settlers were Dutch.

The last coin on this "Quick Bits" list is the 1936 Providence, Rhode Island Tercentenary Half Dollar. The coin was issued in commemoration of the 300th Anniversary of the founding of Providence (in present-day Rhode Island) as one of the Colony's/State's earliest settlements.

Included among the short list of Rhode Island's founding settlements are Portsmouth and Newport. both of which are located on Aquidneck Island, which is the source of the State's name - a combined derivation of the monikers applied by Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano who compared today's Aquidneck with the Greek island of Rhodes in 1542 and Dutch explorer Adriaen Block who referred to the island as "roodlich Eylande" or "Red Island" due to its soil color (a red clay) in 1614.

I enjoy these quick bits, and am always a fan of your intriguing connections between the commemorative coins.

Thank you for sharing.

I must say however that you have left out an obvious addition to this "Island" series. I suspect you did so intentionally as to throw us a softball.

Sneaky you.

I'll take the bait - it's your avatar.

You got me! I thought I might throw folks off the scent by including the Providence, Rhode Island coin on the list as many don't realize the State's island origins (regardless of its name), but my plan was thwarted!

You can't make an "Island Connection" in the classic-era US commemorative coin series without including the Roanoke Colony (on Roanoke Island) 350th Anniversary Half Dollar!

I've got a few of these "local" coins in my collection, here are two:

PS It's only fitting that nickelsearcher spotted my "omission by design" as he was also the source for my circulated Roanoke example!

Anyone see any other possibilities/omissions?

Great write up - as usual.

But if British explorer Captain James Cook 'discovered' the Hawaiian Islands, how did it come to be an American possession and not claimed by the British?

None that come to mind from the classic commemorative series. I don't know the modern series well enough to comment on that aspect.

I'd like to offer up another classic-era US commemorative coin that I previously held back, but merits strong consideration (IMO) for an "Island Connection" list: the 1892-93 World's Columbian Exposition - Christopher Columbus Half Dollar - I thought it might be the first coin to come to mind for collectors - but "No.". (Shows how much I know!)

Between 1890 and 1891, the US Congress authorized the World's Columbian Exposition ("Exposition") to be held in Chicago, Illinois and appropriated funds for its financial support. The Exposition was to celebrate "the four hundredth anniversary of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus."

Reference to "America", however, was/is not interchangeable with "United States". Columbus' 1492 explorations were in the Caribbean Sea not the North American mainland that would come to include the United States. In fact, Columbus never stepped foot on mainland North America.

During Columbus' 1492 voyage, he visited an island in the present-day Bahamas that he named San Salvador. He also explored parts of Cuba and Hispaniola (the island that presently is comprised of Haiti and the Dominican Republic).

So, Columbus "discovering" America was really more about "discovering" Caribbean islands (and later areas of Central and South America) vs. the United States - and thus the coin's "Island Connection" is established.

I considered that one - but decided against nominating it for reasons I can't explain.

I can say that we are thankful and appreciative of all that you share.
