I was saddened yesterday to receive an email from Canadian Coin News saying that Bill English had passed at age 102.

Bill was a founding member of ONA and a few other coin clubs. He was also very active in the RCNA for most of his life. I last saw him at the 2022 RCNA convention in Ottawa.

Bill had been one of the variety pioneers in the 1960s and 1970s with Hans Zoell. Those two, along with a few others, formed the Coin Irregularity Association of Canada and published The Kayak, a monthly pamphlet of their error and variety finds.

I first met Bill in 2006 when I was working on my first variety book (my 1858 die study). He came to my seminar talks back then and was tremendously supportive of my work. At the RCNA conventions several of us would meet to discuss errors and varieties, and Bill was almost always there.

He was a great guy. I will miss his pleasant conversation and numismatic insights.

Well, I'm sure that I met him at one of the old major shows and one of the RCNA conventions, but my mind is a bit fuzzy on it. It's always sad to see one of the Canadian variety pioneers pass.

None of us are getting any younger. I really miss the old TOREX shows at the Radisson Admiral and the other TO venues, and the early (for me, 2006 to 2013 or so) RCNA conventions. The BS sessions in the bar with some of the most knowledgeable coin guys around. Many folks we used to meet at those shows and in those bar room sessions are now gone. Jim Charlton, Geoff Bell, Jack Griffin, Doug Robins, Chuck Moore, Bill English, Jim Lawson, Phil Carrigan, Harvey Richer. Others as well.

Time marches on.

Bobby, not that I was aware. It is possible he was a lurker. He was a quiet, softspoken guy. Not a guy who would post much, if at all.
