Noticed my otherwise pristine 1968 Kennedy proof has an odd looking "8". Closeup shows disfigured top half and a point protrusion out the top left side. Would it even possible to have a 1967 source when the only 1967 "proof " was the SMS? This coin does have a thin plastic cover on it that the photos are looking through. Just a messed up 8 or something more? Thanks

Looks like damage.
You can open the case, it's not sealed
Just be careful

Something definitely hit the right top of the 8. There are numerous little dings in the fields above it, too. Also possibly a squiggly lint strikethrough behind Kennedy's head.

There is no such thing as an 8/7. The date is in the master die
and not hand punched so there is no possibility for a 8/7.

An overdate coin is a coin variety in which the date shows visible traces of an earlier year. This occurs when a mint modifies an existing die by engraving or punching a new date over the old date. Coins struck from such dies show overlapping or partially visible digits from two different years.

Yeah, agreed. The 1942/1 dime and 1943/2 nickel had their earlier date from the master hub down into the working dies. A working die can always be modified post-manufacture with a punch or engraving.

Not that this proof Kennedy is an overdate.

That little knock on the 8 is probably from the hopper or the ejection process. I don't know how you'd hit that hard during handing without marking up the fields, too.

Sorry for the late response. A specific reply - unknown if there was damage to the original mint case. And it already had it's clear, tight shrink wrapped cover on.
Thanks for all comments, but I must say I am disappointed. I was waiting and hoping for the big congratulations that I had the one and only 8/7 1968 Kennedy proof!!! LOL!!!
