I purchased these two NGC graded ancient Roman coins from a dealer at a coin show. I paid $290CDN for each one. What do you think of them? Did I pay too much for them?

Unfortunately,
although NGC will not slab any ancient coin which, in their opinion, is not genuine,
they do not offer any guarantees in that regard.

All care taken, no responsibility accepted.

However, NGC is the only company that will grade ancient coins.
Some assurance is better than none at all.

If you like them, who cares?
If you don't, then yes, you paid too much.

On a more serious note, I am a collector, not a dealer, any my sense is that the market has been creeping steadily upward for some time. I always do my research on past sales, then get surprised that I need to pay more than what I expect from that research.

tdziemia, the market has been creeping up and I can't believe how much some coins are going for. I feel like everyone is overpaying, but that might be the norm now. That being said, yes that is a lot of money for two fairly common denarii. I wouldn't worry too much about it, we have all overpaid (especially when we first started). At least you know they are authentic. My best advice is to check what the coins have sold for. I use an ebay search and click on "sold", and and a google search "Lucius Verus Denarius sold" then click on images and scroll and click.

I also use the same search using Vcoins "Lucius Verus Denarius Vcoins sold".

David Sear will grade ancients...if it is important to you that someone else tell you what condition your coin is in.

If you are planning to get more into ancient coins, I would suggest that you get to know a few ancient coin dealers that have a good reputation. Among other things, they can give you more confidence about authenticity without needing it slabbed.

Personally, I prefer ancient coins without a slab. it is important to me to handle them (carefully) before buying.
