Great looking Shield nickel. What is that piece that looks detached a bit right of the date on the rim?

That is a nice looking coin.

The reverse with rays and stars always brings to mind an image of 4th of July fireworks going off.

I see several expected die cracks, as well as MD on the UNITED legend. Adds some period appropriate character to the coin.

Nahhh. I had considered it at some point. I was mainly debating about doing a Shield nickel set.
