This 1985D penny has bubbles on both sides and between columns on reverse, obscuring Lincoln somewhat.

The mint struggled with the copper plated zinc coins starting in 1982. These are common and simply known as plating blisters.

Starting with zincoins in 1982, plating bubbles/blisters
are very common, especially in the early years.

Yes - early Zincolns (copper plated zinc core cents) are notorious for plating bubbles.

When they burst and expose the zinc core than environmental rot quickly sets in.

Yours is a typical example prior to any surface damage.

I agree with above. It's a very common issue on the Zincolns. https://www.error-ref.com/blisteredplating/

Even with the plating problems your cent is a great example condition wise for a 1985-D.

a cause, anything is possible, from improper washing of the planchets prior to plating, to poor adhesion of the copper plaiting to the zinc planchet 'deteriorating' (Basically rust)
