Grading-Opinions,-With-Noted-Tooling,-Of-A-Nero-Denarius.

I just purchased this Nero denrius from a CNG auction.

Nero (54-68 AD). AR Denarius (18mm, 3.34g, 6h.) Rome mint, struck 64-65 AD (circa the time of the great fire). Toned, tooling on obverse.

O: Laureate head of Nero right.
NERO CAESAR AVGVSTVS

R: Roma seated left on a cuirass, holding Victory and parazonium, foot on helmet; a greave to right. (Grove is plural, which is the armor to protect the front calf area).
ROMA

RIC I #55; RSC 258.

Any thoughts or concerns?

It's a beautiful coin, congrats! I always have a difficult time figuring out what exactly is tooled on a coin. It wouldn't stop me from buying one, however, I would be cautious that a tooled coin can diminish the value up to 50%. What did CNG grade it as?

Thank you, Travelcoin. CNG, graded the coin VF. I've yet to have the coin in hand, but from what I see for tooling on the obverse it seems very minor. The coin is definitely better than my first Nero denarius, as the flan was only 17mm and the coin only had partial legends, so a decent upgrade.

I felt this example had a nice portrait of Nero, but I wish there was a bit more detail of, Roma on the reverse.

I still have Caligula, Claudius and Otho to go into completing my 12 Caesars set. Caligula and Claudius seem especially daunting to acquire in silver denarii.

A recent sale of the same coin, which seems to show more provenance:-

Thank you, Maridvnvm for the link! It is the same coin of my recent purchase. The ancient market is sure growing by leaps and bounds, as coins from the era are becoming more and more expensive!

Does anyone else see any obvious signs of tooling on the obverse? I see something at the front hairline of, Nero, but I must admit that I am unexpierenced in the detection of tooling.

The hairline on the brow has been worked.
