Interesting piece....would be interesting to know more about it...did a bit of searching and I found this link - http://www.powerhousemuseum.com/col.../?irn=303792This says it is a token....not idea if that is correct. These tokens were circulated by Richard Maplesden, a grocer and draper in Winchelsea. Ten tons were issued, with three edge inscriptions of which this example is one. Do you if it says 'BRIGHTON CAMP HALFPENNY X.X.X' on the edge? Ken

I found one listed in Coinarchives.com, that sold for $266 in 2003.

Thanks guys , its my "happy coin" never fails to make me smile..and after reading your guys posts I'm smiling a bit wider tody. I didnt realise it was potentially rare.Just had it in among my conder tokens,i never took it to be a conder though as it had royal connections. Kena , yes it has that inscription, quite clear.

Hi Kena , Conder tokens came about during a period of great shortage in small change.Various places of employment , shopkeepers , even hospitals had halfpenny and penny tokens minted.Often quite beautifully designed. They were catolouged originally in a book by a guy named Conder..hence Conder tokens. A similar occurance was in the US during the civil war , a shortage of small change brought about the minting of private tokens. Heres a few of my favorites from Scotland , Glasgow and Edinburgh halfpennies.Ill look out others if youd like to see more.Ive some with the Druid on from Wales , a coal mine minting from the 18thc.

I bought an old beat up Glasgow halfpenny last year Kena , with some kind guideance from another token fan here on the forum I learned about them and went after pristine examples. My most recent is the liverpool halfpenny , another stunner.Ill get some pics for you soon. These were all issued around the late 1700's , pretty cool coins as you say.
