Hello to Everyone who isn't digging-out right now... here is an 1878 7TF Dollar, with strongly doubled denticles both sides, that I think can happen only if the reverse die lifted and struck the coin again, just a tiny bit off, as opposed Machine Doubling. Can there be MD on denticles? What do you think?

In my opinion it's not double struck, maybe some Machine Doubling. Here is one of mine, I wonder if mine was struck with slightly misaligned die, one side of the rim is much bigger than the other end and maybe some Machine Doubling on the denticles. This coin is at the bank box so I can't look at it closer. Slight misaligned dies or Machine Doubling do not add value.

Maybe your coin is sligthly misaligned too. The colored toning on your coin is pretty. Do you think it's natural or someone artifically treated it?

livingwater: here's a picture of the edge of mine, taken at the same place. The incised line decapitating the denticles disappears at a merge with the normal rim near the top, on both sides. You can see this in the pic: the edge of the coin is broader from the milling at that area, and the milling descends to the bottom of the coin, a somewhat tilted collar strike. My pics are photos in diffused natural light; it scans an almost deeeply bluish maroon with a dark background; the solid bar of color on the reverse from 2-4:00 is from being flush against the bottom fold of a coin envelope. I can't convince myself that the toning is "lab-grown"; in hand it's pretty and intense, with some polychrome remaining...

IMHO, the incuse line concentric to the rim is an indication it was in a bezel at one time.

Besides the attractive color (hopefully not AT), what I notice about this coin is the sharp detail on the eagle's breast. Don't think I've ever seen an 1878 with a better strike. Nice!
