Hi. I was trying to find this coin with no results. All I know is-coin is 1 grosz dated 1727. Eagle looks like Peter I. Any clue about meaning of two dots(or three) above denomination? Moved to World Coin forum - SapEdited by valdiman 06/18/2009 12:45 pm

I have no idea where this coin is from. "Grosh" is a Polish/German denomination, not Russian, but it's clearly in Cyrillic, with a Russian eagle. Russia owned no Polish/German territories in 1727, as far as I'm aware. It's not listed in Krause under Russia, Poland or Lithuania. In Russian coins of the period, dots above indicate the denomination: 10 dots are on the grivennik, or 10 kopek. If this is a real coin, that's presumably what the dots stand for. So this coin would be a "two somethings". Very mysterious.

Found these pictures on a different websiteThe coin has the same design but the features are different. Can anyone translate this? Item is described as.... Quote:UNIKALNY PRÓBNY GROSZ 1727 MENNICZY SREBRO Opis z domu aukcyjnego: Pattern Grosh 1727, no mint mark, monogram, Uzd E465-130, novodel B 9, UNCirculated rare.

description saing:unique silver pattern grosz 1727.hmm if both are patterns-why design is so different?I think one of them is fake but without any trace in Krausse is hard to decide.Coin on red background is listed in copies and fakes-so why price is close to 300$?Really misterious.

Well done GO, that's it. "Uzd E465-130" and "novodel B 9" sound like catalogue references. If "novodel B 9" is supposed to the the Krause reference, it's wrong, because KM# N B9 is an undated poltina. There's no grosh listed in the Krause Russian novodel section.
It looks the same, except the eagle is all wrong. Particularly compare the size of the Imperial orb; it looks more like an Imperial basketball on valdiman's example.
I don't know how much variance there would be with novodels, but I'd be suspicious of this one. Though at 945 zlotych (= US$290) we're not talking about a super-rarity either way.

Novodel is nothing more than a government policy to collectors to restrike elder coins for collecting purposes. Most recent are the Novodels of russian Roubles 1988, originally struck in between 1975-1988. Novodel has to stay in the rim with year of restrike and a star for Russian money or a lettering code for ancient Comecon-countries, so B9 would be Bulgaria type 9. This "Krakau"grosz is made round and about that same time, 1980-1990. It could be a premium to a local newspaper or magazin. Origin Leningrad/petersburg mint.

If Johnny Knoxville from MTV-J.A.C.K-A.S!S! can be installed as a pope in the Vatican, then I assure you this coin is a silver 1727 pattern whith a value of far above the asking price. Mind you, Schwarzenegger is a Gouvernor, and Benedictus a Wehrmacht-Hitlerjugend Pope, so anyhting is possible.
