(forgot there was a dedicated US Classic Grading forum)

Hoping I didn't overpay too much at USD125.

I'm terrible at grading these, so I could be wrong on the grade. I think it would detail, due to the scratches from a cleaning, or whatever happened to it. Maybe AU details?

Grade looks more in the XF range to me - but I'm no expert on these.

@NicMar - please give better thought to your photo overload selection. 4 separate photos that show the same thing do not give us additional information but can cause us to not want to bother with the thread.

Polite reminder to E&V this is a family friendly forum, so be mindful of your language. If you don't want your 11 tear old daughter to read it, then don't post it here. Thanks

this is another one of those series that really takes a little bit of learning curve to grade these.

i couple thing I have picked up along the way but still find difficult to grade them

1. strike issues were an issue due to how thin the coins were
2. the shield boarders can sometimes be weak in areas always look at this first.
3. the tops of the points from the shield shows wear first.
4. you have a higher grade coin if the centers of the stars are prominent
5.the tops of the buttons is another area to look at for first wear

the shield outlines are pretty well defined. imo this indicates a coin higher than XF. a couple of the top of the points are still raised
for this one, the tops of the buttons show very little wear. the diamond button imo also indicates an AU coin
there are too many longer scratches on the obv of this one for it to pass. several stars are fully defined. you're not going to see that on an XF coin

AU50 Details (scratched)

a straight graded AU50 would retail for about $150
i think you may have paid a tad too much for this one. if thats all I had to buy one, i'd rather have a straight lower grade coin possible XF40/45

So it appears there is an emerging consensus that it is AU-DETAILS (OBVERSE SCRATCHES).

I looked through every single Completed Listing of an 1851 Trime on ebay, it doesn't look like I did too badly with the price. It was either this or pay 75 for a VF.

You guys are right that it is a difficult denomination to grade. Mine does appear to have a stronger strike than some other examples.

Nickelsearcher, I'm confused. What did I say that was disrespectful? I wasn't intending to be at all. If I did, then I apologize. That wasn't my intention of that comment.

It was not disrespectful, you used language inappropriate for a family forum.

Your original reply was edited by a moderator at my request to 'I'm terrible'

I have great respect for your contributions E&V, so will sent you a PM that quotes your original language - so you can have clarity.

Edit: You don't have your email turned on so I have no further options to followup unless you contact me directly

Well the reverse looks nice it's just too bad it looks like the obverse was cleaned. And for $125 I'd say that isn't bad - it's only money, ya can't take it with you when you're pushing up daisies so might as well spend it now on a coin you like!

@Marv

That's a good attitude to have. The scratched obverse is sad, but otherwise I like the sharp strike and the general tone of the coin. Guess I'll induct it into my J.B. Longacre type set...
