ebay seller pics resembled FFD, so I picked it up for theee bucks. In hand, it's really hard to say what caused this patch. It is hard to photograph due to glare, and the feature is very shallow. It might be a spot where the engraver removed a problem from the die. Maybe it's FFD after repeated SMS die re-polishing. Could also be struck through oil or shallow grease.

The anomaly doesn't stand up sharply like die scratches. It presents almost like surface undulations.

You say it is shallow, incuse or raised?

The patch gives the appearance of sunken, with the lines raised. That's what made me think of a strike through grease or oil. However, I am not presently aware of such a strike through producing aligned raised lines.

It's also possible that it was hubbed through debris, which would produce raised lines.
