Don't remember where I found this but it puzzles me. Retained clip? What are the large divots on the obv and rev? Are what I am calling "clip" and "divot" (for lack of knowledge) related? Cheers.

It's damage ( PMD), not an error.

Thank you. Guess someone had too much time on their hands. Might have been their "unlucky penny..."

Something dawned on me about these damaged Lincoln cents (maybe I have too much time on my own hands, heh.). Not sure if I should be posting in different forum but y'all have seen all kinds of damage to coins. While damage can come in all sorts of forms (the methods or causes/reasons never cease to amaze me) for the earlier Lincoln cents, I have a hypothesis: Some forms of intentional damage may be a result of people's dissatisfaction related to Lincoln himself - his politics and philosophy. I have seen many early weaties where it looks like a tool or something defaced/dented Lincoln's face/bust. So, initial questions I have for potential research: 1) Do you often come across damage that might fit this description (omitting Jewelry and corrosion)? 2) Do you come across other coin series, of any denomination, where this type of damage occurs as frequently as in Lincoln cents? 3) Would you find this a worthy topic for exploration?

Thanks for your thoughts or redirection of topic. cb

I suppose in coin roll hunting I've seen several instances of "historically accurate" pennies with holes around Lincoln's ear.

Thanks for your reply. Wow, holes through ear area. Very aggressive. Have not seen any of those yet. I know intent would be wildly difficult to prove no matter the damage, but that's something! Thanks for chiming in!
