I ordered a 2008 American Eagle coin directly from the U.S. Mint and I was looking at it closely and saw that there is a strange sun ray on the obverse. It is -not straight.- On the left side of the sun ray it is sort of wavy and looks different compared to the 2007 ASE. Is this normal on 2008's?

The AE appears to have a slight indentation that extends from the bottom of the "L" into the Ray! IMHO, the AE was probably Struck Thru a piece of paper or other thin foreign material that somewhat covered that area of the Ray as the AE was being struck (minted).

My 2009 has it... but not my 1989. Have to check on the 2000 and 2004 later.

I had a little time, so I copied and pasted the top picture to my' PC to check out the area between the "L" and the Ray a little more closely. I am reasonably certain that the ASE was Struck Thru a piece of paper or other thin foreign material as you can see that there a somewhat of a texture to the area in question...especially the Northern part. I cropped the picture and have included it and an edited picture in hopes that you can see what I am talking about!

If it shows like that on the 2008's you probably won't find it on earlier dates. They changed the obverse hub in 2008 so comparing it to earlier years is comparing apples and oranges.
