I believe this to be a specimen of FS-106, the 1938 QDO nickel. It's a bit of a challenge to photograph through the slab plastic. The BVC die scratch pair between U and S of TRUST seems present. I am not quite sure how to interpret the markers on the mouth, the catalog picture is not a great one. I might try to find a better representation on PCGS tomorrow.

I will get some full coin pics in daylight tomorrow.

As I already have a specimen of this quadrupled die obverse, I think I would be willing to attribute this coin and put it up for sale on ebay. I am happy to take coaching on how to do that. It seems like a risk to try a crossover to PCGS, because if they drop the Full Steps designation, that's a large drop in value.

First find out if they even will classify that variety.

It's actually a required registry coin for nickel variety sets.

I think maybe I have the numbering confused somewhere. The QDO is FS-105. The Wexler catalog cross references the old CPG code. I think maybe the entry on Variety Vista has a typo, and is actually FS-105 and not FS-106.

I agree with you...I think it's FS-105
I looked through all the PCGS images (FS and non-FS) and couldn't find the "markers on the mouth" like yours?
So I went to Great Collections...this is the only one that I could find that's close to yours...?

For the heck of it...let's see a pic of the reverse and what makes you hesitant of a FS designation.

As you guys can probably see, this nickel is on the edge for full steps. I know the rules are different for Reverse of 1938 wavy steps, but I think it would be a real dice roll to cross this coin to PCGS.

The counter-argument is the image catalog for 1938 5¢ QDO FS-105 with MS FS on PCGS:

https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin...images/38480

Lots of imperfections on the Full Steps coins there, too. But we don't know how many similar coins were rejected for FS designation. You can safely ignore the price grid on this variety. The research I have done shows there is a gap of at least a couple hundred bucks for the QDO in MS between ordinary and FS. A Full Steps is also probably much easier to liquidate.
