Hi,
My son and I found a large cent and it was really corroded. It has some interesting markings for example it has a raised half circle starting just before the L in Liberty curving down just before her hair and then it curves back up just to the right of the B in liberty. Is that unique to a 1794 or 5? The reverse has some raised lines as well.
Where would be a good place to research the various types of the early coppers?

Hi ChemStoich

Welcome to the forum !!

The pics are a little small and dark to make out the detail that you mentioned.

But your coin looks like the 1794 head of 1794 type,, and without being able to see it clearly I would have to guess post mint damage or possibly a die crack.

If you can enhance the pics I would love to see this coin more clearly !!

What a great find !!!

try to the left of the dialog box under coin histories to get you started on research.

Rick

Hi Rick,
Thanks for the info. I tried to get a higher resolution pic but the forum would not allow the pic. We are taking my son Ian to the movies but I will try to enhance the pic later tonight. This is so exciting for my son. He wants to treasure hunt now more than ever!
Thanks Again,
Dave

Here are better pics that were sent to me along with this description:

The reverse is rotated just like in the pic. The reverse also has a depression between the last "S" in States and the F in OF all the way through the coin until the CA in America and the zero of the fraction. It also has a high copper line just off the C in Cent running at 10 o'clock. My son wants to sell it on ebay without us finding out more about the coin but I am trying to show him the scientific method of searching for the truth about our find. The edge is lettered if that helps anyone.

Thanks Susan,
If anyone has an idea on what type of 1794 this coin might be please let me know. I will continue to look at all the pics from 1794 large cents which are in better condition but to me they all look similar on ebay. I read the article"1793-96 Liberty Cap Cent" that Rick suggested but is there a site with pictures of all the various 1974 types?
Thanks for any help:) Getting the Large Cent Fever

There is not enough detail remaining on the coin for me to pinpoint the variety. I do believe it's a head of 1794, but there are variations within that description. I would call the grade AG3. I believe you could expect to get between $85-100 for it.
