First I would like to say that in my excitement I forgot to take pictures of the coin to show all you good folks here before sending it in to NGC for grading. The coin is a 1931 2 Aurar in Unc and its the first one I ever seen in that grade. While looking over this coin I noticed on the right side of the obverse I seen the upper one third portion of 4 or 5 letters of a word that is on the reverse of this coin. I'm guessing that this coin was struck twice. Please correct me if I'm wrong in my thinking how this happened. I think that a coin was stuck to the upper die when the new planchet was placed in the dies then struck the obverse with the prior coin still stuck to the upper die leaving the impression of the reverse on the obverse side of the planchet then the prior coin falling off and then the upper die striking the planchet again leaving the coin with the correct obverse design but leaving the tell tale impression of the reverse lettering around the portion of the obverse of the coin. Any help would greatly appreciated. when I get this coin back from NGC I will post some pictures of this coin.

Maybe it's just me and it being late, but after that paragraph, I think I'm going to need pictures to see what you're talking about When you get it back, please let us know what it graded and post pics for us to see what you are describing!

It could be a vise job or a die clash. Were the letters mirror image or normal?

Hi snowman how have you been?
The portion of the letters that you can see are a mirrored imaged. What is a vise job? If you are thinking that someone may have put two coins together and then put them in a vise I'm sure the coin will show that some how.

Here are a pic of the coin and area in question. I remembered that the person I got the coin from sent me some pictures. On the back of the coin is the word ISLAND which looks like what the impression is from. Its a little hard to make out the letters but once I get the coin back from NGC I will take better pic with my mircoscope camera.

If the words are backwards and there is no obvious damage to the coin, then I'd be willing to bet you have a die clash. Basically, this happens when the dies come together without a planchet in between them. This results in devices from one die transferring onto the other. When you get the coin back examine it closely. I'd be willing to bet there are more areas like the one pictured above.
