I was taking some pictures of the coins included in my sets and noticed an interesting letter N in regina on an 1881 H large cent.

Any idea how this can occur. It looks like it was an incomplete N and had to be repunched but how can that be on only one letter?

thanks for opinions

It's a repunched n.Quite often in Victorian times to extend the life the die,it was heated and a single letter or number was repunched by a sometimes unsteady hand.
An example of the type of N you have can probably be found here http://dan-in-crystal-lake.piczo.co...r=6&nsrc=slh a great reference for large cent varieties.

thanks DBM! I really like that site. I also never knew that they would repunch individual letters. I guess you learn something new everyday
