I am not sure of how to value coins that have a very nice eye appeal and great toning. Believe it or not I picked this up in change the other day.It just stands out and the condition is superb. any thought on condition and value even though it is a 1984 ?. I am going to keep it because I like it so much and thats most important, but as a value ?

Hi Grovey

Im afraid that beauty is in the eye of the beholder when it comes to toned coins Especially when it comes to more common date coins,,I appreciate them and have many that I have kept simply because I like the looks of them but their value is still only as much as the grade and in some cases for those who dislike toning worthless.

Hey Grovey!
That's a pretty well persevered coin for pulling it out of change. The first question I might ask is are there any visible signs of wear? It's hard to tell from the photo. Let’s suppose it was languishing in a roll or in someone’s penny jar and you rescued it from circulation right away. It looks like it would qualify as full red as the percentage of brown seems minimal. That may change soon if somebody got a greasy fingerprint on it that has not yet browned it out! Lets also suppose it state of preservation is MS65R...you have a $5.00 to $7.00 retail value coin. It’s tough to spend $10-15 to find out unless you submit it as a filler to make a TPG's minimum submission requirement. Now jump to MS66-67 and you could retail at $25.00 $50.00 in a major TPG'S slab. The downside of the whole thing is that many dealers have roll after roll of mint state modern pennies lying around and they can usually be purchased for not much over face value. Having said all that you snatched a very clean 21-year-old penny and keeping it is exactly what I would do! Mike

Toning is really a diverse topic. There are pros & cons on both sides. It boils down to the indivual collector. I personally don't care for toned coins however there are others who would kill for one. It's up to you to decide.
