Imo almost 80% of silver coinage has been not necessarily cleaned, but dipped at some time in its life. Same with older copper. Collectors were recommended to "clean" their coins years ago. Some of this is accepted depending on the series.
That being said, if you want to clean your coins, you most likely will severely damage its numismatic value.

Cold water and pat dry...less abrasion the less value lost. -Tom
