i would like to know what happens to coins if you put them in cold water to wash the little bit of dirt off them

It should be fine, as long as you don't rub the coin with a cloth or anything like that. I've also heard that you should use distilled water because tap water has chlorine in it. I'm sure someone else will come along with more information.

alot of my coins are curculated coins and they area little dirty so I thought oh maybe I should wash them in water

They should be fine with a water rinse

Like others have said, they should be okay as long as you don't rub with a cloth or brush. A light finger rub is okay as long as you have washed your' hands thoroughly to remove any body oils and salts. Now, if you use any type of soap on them, then many soaps leave a film on the coins that can change the color from Red or RB to hues of Blue, Green, Purple and Violet or combinations of any or all of them.
