Does anyone know why someone would stamp the letters R M C on the obverse above the motto?

This is one of the charms of "grafitti" coins. Half the fun is dreaming and speculating about what it could mean or who it belonged to or where it was.

Grafitti coins are unfortunately looked down upon by "real" coin collectors. I find your coin much more interesting than a 1929-S in the same condition WithOut the grafitti.

I always like a good copper countermark, especially the ones that used to advertise patent medicines and the like. This site should give you an idea of the diversity of known countermarks
