Try a solution called Aqua Regia. Should take the dirt off anything metal you add to that.

As to a solution you should just test the many available at Walmart. The last time I was there they had several different types for cleaning jewlery and stuff.
However, you should really not use that thing for anything expesive. We used to use them all the time to clean ink pens. A plain old soapy solution was all that was required and we occationally dumped things in there such as rings. They worked nice for those but for coins, I'd shy away from those things.
