I found a 1942 nickel that doesn't have a big mintmark over the building on the back, but is it still silver?

No. They changed alloys during 1942, so during the first part of the year we have the regular alloy. When Nickel was removed and Silver was added, the mintmark was moved and enlarged through the rest of the year and through 1945. If you don't have one yet, may I suggest you get a copy of the RedBook! It is very useful and has alot of valuable general information as well as a guide for pricing. It is issued every year, but even if you pick up an older issue at a used book store for a couple of bucks....the information in it will greatly enhance your knowledge. I think I got my first copy in 1975 and it got alot of use.
