I have a Littleton Coin package with the 5 westward journey nickels in it. I've seen some nice modern toned coins and decided to see if I could tone some of those Littleton nickels, just out of curiosity. I placed the 5 nickels(still in the Littleton package) in front of a window. Its been a few months now, and I see that there is only one nickel that has toning on it. It is a nice golden coat that covers the whole surface evenly and all the other nickels are as white as I got them. How can this be if I've made sure the conditions for each coin is the same? I thought this was interesting and just wanted to share. Thanks

I've got a question: what do you put a coin in to get it to tone?

I don't find toning appealing at all. In fact I consider a toned coin to be junk.

I like rainbow toned coins, not coins that are toned black.

I think toned coins can go either way. Some of my mercs have toning that makes it look dirty. It really stinks because it happened to my best few(Unc 1940s). Sometimes, older coins look amazing with toning. Opinion and placement affect it.
I think that any coin not perfect is worth less than a perfect coin.

I wonder what kind of plastic those coins are enveloped in? I like a coin with natural toning on it. Littleton, why do they want so much money for their stuff?

I assume that these are packaged the way most of their coins are, sealed in plastic. One of two things probably happened 1. The coin was contaminated with something before it got in the package or 2. The package that particular coin is in has an air leak. Not being able to SEE them, hard to say You should know better than to post without pics Coincollectingkid, I have coins in various places to try to see how or if they tone. I have a few in some old Kraft envelopes on a windowsill , a few in a drawer of an antique buffet that has a wonderful wood smell to it so I know it is still out-gassing. As far as success goes - the envelopes might be to old and all gassed out (no more sulfur or any other chemicals to get the toning going) The wood buffet has given a couple of my clad Ikes that nice blue hue pretty quickly, but that is not a stretch, I have seen many Ikes toned in this way (Not talking about the hazy blue proofs) And the Franklins I have in there seems to be toning a bit too, after six months I would not recommend applying anything to a coin to get it to tone, except air. If the air happens to have a higher sulphur content it can really accelerate the coins toning. Remember though, Toning can look nice but it will always end in black for silver eventually. If it is nicely toned you'd better keep it from getting more toned for as long as possible. I am talking about silver and nickel coins here just to be clear, I am not trying to tone any nice red copper !! Nature will eventually do that for you anyway. Heat helps too..also not recommended in high doses A Zincoln will turn pink in the oven, and I think the quarters and nickels will usually turn yellow and or blue in heat. You can do alot of things to coins, and most of them NOT GOOD. You could sneeze on the coin, I have seen spotted coins from careless handlers Fingerprints work too....Hmmm....I think I am going to lick one tonight... I'll let ya know how it turns out

Actually all of the five nickels are in the same plastic holder. I was just wondering why 1 of the 5 nickels was toning and the others were not. And yes, I will have to post pictures, Thanks

I placed 5 gold sascation dollars in different napkins and put them in the bathroom. They have be there almost a year with no change. So about two weeks ago I took a Ike dollar, sac dollar, dime, nickle and penny. Placed them on the window sill outside. Rain, weather and heat have done nothing yet. Waiting. Many years ago I received a nickle in a paper baggie from Litteton that had blued. To this day it is still blue in the paper baggie.
