akglen Valued Member United States 170 Posts	Posted 07/05/2009 12:56 pm I thought it was just circulation damage myself when I first saw it, thinking it was a plated coin which was peeling. But my book shows it is bronze and doesn't mention any kind of plating. Is this correct? It looks to me that a foreign piece of metal got between the blank and the die and was pressed into the blank. elsjls Valued Member United States 168 Posts	Posted 07/05/2009 1:10 pm Kind of looks like glue around the out side of the extra metal. Might be that it was mounted in some way to show the ship. If it was mint damage I would think it should have some detail in the extra bit. Report this Post to the Staff

DVCollector Bedrock of the Community United States 10045 Posts	Posted 09/19/2009 2:42 pm Glue would've been my first guess...but from the last pic, that object w/verdigris appears bonded/struck into the coin. Or, it's an impurity in the planchet, and perhaps the top layer broke off after being struck? Report this Post to the Staff
