I wish I could take a better picture of the reverse as there are details to be made out. I can make out a faint 19 and you can see parts of the maple leaf. The odd thing is that I can also see part of the queens portrait. On the obverse you can see strange things happening on the rim starting half way up both sides.
Any idea's of what happened here?

I'm no pro but I will take a guess, the obverse is a misaligned die issue and the reverse is a Grease Filled Die issue. The misaligned die is not enough to be collectible but the Grease Filled Die sure is.

Seeing how there's a raised rim on the reverse, that's an interesting one!

I know nothing of errors, but I think it reminds me of a capped die or brockage. It has something to do with a coin getting stuck on the die. Then this planchet goes into the press and one side (obverse is stamped by the press, the other side (reverse) is stamped by the obverse of the first coin. That puts the image of the queen on the reverse of this coin. It also prevents the rim from forming which is why the rim on the reverse looks funny. I don't even know if I'm explaining (or even understand it myself) correctly.
Hopefully someone will come along and tell me I'm way off base or I'm correct.

A really good resource is John Regitko for Canadian errors. He has a column regarding error coins in the Canadian Coin News. You can reach him at:

TMI, glenzy!

akglen, if you post this in the error forum, you could get the big error guys to weigh in on it. Sometimes errors are not what they first seem. Great coin!

Struck by an early-stage, uniface hammer die cap. The working face of the die cap never had an image.

Holy smokes - this was an old thread.
Interesting that the coin was in circulation for a while.
