I have decided to create my own code for my 1000 post contest. I will give hints every day or so and if you have a question, go ahead and ask. It might get an answer. The prize is a 40% silver 5 year set of JFK from 1965-1969.

Rules:

1. Contest available to all with 50+ posts
2. Winner must be able to explain encoding method, a random correct guess is not a winner.
3. Multiple guesses a day are acceptable, but remember rule #2.
4. Have Fun.

Clue: This is a quote and contains the name of the quoter, and when the quote was made.

Hi Nod! Thanks for the contest! I'm intrigued!

Questions:

1. It's a 7 x 7 word listing. Any significance to that?

2. Is the spacing for any word/sentence separations?

3. Is the quote complete here, or is it abbreviated?

4. Any data on the quoter or date?

Start the hints soon (Please?)

This is an interesting code! It's nice to be on the other side of this encryption stuff!

Hint #1, The quote was made in the latter half of the 19th C by an American.
Hint #2, There are no word/sentence separations.

Does the code need to be edited to reflect this? and does this mean that the quoters name is also no more than 5 letters?

I am not going to edit the code to reflect this, I will just leave it to state the wrong year. Its not really a big deal. The name is longer then 5 letters.

Obviously not a 1 for 1 translation (i.e. S = E). (It doesn't appear you have enough symbols to support the quote, the quoter's name and the year or place of the quote. So there is type of shorthand/abbreviation/initials going on here... (Of course I don't know shorthand...))

I converted the letters to numbers and tried to apply them to a type of alphabetical grid but it didn't seem to lend itself to anything useful.

I also tried to zero in on the date in your code (using the numerical idea). I looked for an R, the 18th letter (for a late 19th century date) but the only R is followed by a V which is the 22nd letter for a possible date of 1822. No go for late century. SO, there really is no good way to get a late 19th century date using the alphabet...

Plus the only R is near the beginning of the quote. Usually one would find the date at or near the end, with the quoter's name.

Backwards, left to right, and top to bottom doesn't look good either... Hmmmmm.

I got the "I need more clues blues..."

Intriguing...

Reverse and then I'm guessing the vowels are omitted (unless they start the word). But it stalls out quickly. Hmmmmm...

Still looking...

Nice code Nod!!

Hey Nod! I'm sorry I haven't been able to give your code the time and attention it deserves.

We're all in Destin, FL and sand, sun and suds have been distracting me...

I'm now thinking vowels are under-utilized and there is a certain number of letter shift to the new arrangement. (i.e., if P = F then there is a minus 9 letter shift in the coding. But I have found little to write on and the sunscreen keeps getting in my eyes...)

I have not forgotten the code though...

(And you still have friends...)
