Today a couple came in and bought a TV, and as I was counting the money I noticed a $100 star note. Then, a $20 star note! I told them about it, they seemed to think it was cool, but didn't care enough to keep them, so they went in the register. I thought about it awhile and decided I could get the 20, but obviously not the 100, so the next time the register was opened, I swapped another $20 for it.

Since I don't know much about collecting bills, I was tempted to see what the $100 was/could be worth. Long story short, I put the $100 star note on top of the stack and when I got off work, I bought some gum and got $100 cash back using my debit card.

Any idea how good a find these were or what they are worth, if anything?

I'd spend both. The 20 is way too worn and the 2006/H is the current series.

Thanks for the quick responses.

They were fun to find, anyways. I may keep them for a little while, see if my local dealer wants them, since he collects paper currency as well as coins.

I guess these aren't as rare as I thought...I was paid another $20 star note today. I didn't "buy" this one though.
How do I know which star notes to keep and which to spend?

I think the first step is to see the date. If it's too recent, then I'd look at the condition. For 2004 on (colored notes) I'd only keep the UNC ones.

The first thing I look for is how many zeros it starts with,at least four is what most collectors look for, then the date then condition.

I got my first star note $1 bill today. I've only been looking for them in my change for a couple of months. It's nothing special - circulated, pretty new date, but I figured I'd hang onto it to see how many I come across. Worst comes to worst I can always spend it.

Here is a website to help you figure out if a particular star note is rare or not.

How on earth can a star note circulate that long? High denominations?

karrlot, thanks for that site, it's great!

Now, for the $100 star note I found, it shows "Total Printed" = 10880000
I assume that's how many were printed in that series and at that facility?
If so, what is an estimate/average for the % of bills printed that are stars?
