Just how scarce are these vams? Does anyone have a fairly realistic estimate on populations?
Thanks!

zeewool,

For accuracy we need to mention that these are 1878-S. Of the nine catalogued long-nocks the three rarest are 72, 62, and 60. PCGS shows the following in their Population reports:
VAM/Total Graded
VAM 26/20
VAM 27/40
VAM 56/25
VAM 57/37
VAM 58/14 (one MSPL)
VAM 59/11
VAM 60/5
VAM 62/8
VAM 72/2

These are very low pop figures for Vams. The long-nocks were the first released of the 78 issue from San Francisco. The variety wasn't distinguished until much later in the 20th century. Most examples show heavy wear due to the amount of circulation they saw. The VamWorld PriceGuide prices reflect the rarity of the 60/62/72.

I have a 26, 27, two 56's, 57 and 59 in my collection. I have been searching dilligently for these three without success.

Thanks SeatedNut,
Since they are the pops for one TPG, would you not think that the actual population is probably five to eight times this or more? I realize that nobody really knows, but I am just trying to get a feel for the scarcity of the 60 and 62.

I have several examples of all of the others, except 72 of course. I do have a 62 in VF-35, and am currently on the hunt for a 60. Given the condition of most long nocks, I only buy coins already in plastic. No cherry picking for me, I could wind up with more of what I already have too much of.
Nice to have a vammer around to bounce thoughts off of.
